Why you should kill Plumeria in Second Life

Let me put it right out here, I hate Plumeria.

Plumeria is ugly

Plumeria is ugly

If you use Plumeria you better be really, really, really good at putting an environment together and surround the ugly of the Plumeria with greatness, and so sorry for you that you felt the need to sully your super, great build by adding Plumeria, maybe you did it because how great your build was you didn’t want the great build police to come and give you a ticket for being so great so you put in Plumeria to take it down a notch.

I have used Plumeria myself at times, (when I was new and didn’t have much experience landscaping) but I always took a shower afterward. It’s fairly easy to be rid of, but if it persists in your builds consider getting some anti-Plumeriabiotics and rest for 3-4 days.

What in the heck is with this plant, what is it really.

From Wikipedia on Plumeria,

Plumeria is related to the Oleander, Nerium oleander, and both possess poisonous, milky sap, rather similar to that of Euphorbia. Each of the separate species of Plumeria bears differently shaped leaves and their form and growth habits are also distinct. The leaves of P. alba are quite narrow and corrugated, while leaves of P. pudica have an elongated oak shape and glossy, dark green color. P. pudica is one of the everblooming types with non-deciduous, evergreen leaves. Another species that retains leaves and flowers in winter is P. obtusa; though its common name is “Singapore”, it is originally from Colombia. Frangipani can also be found in Eastern Africa, where they are sometimes referred to in Swahili love poems.[1]

Does this picture of Plumeria look like Plumeria in Second Life? Kind of - but the Plumeria in Second Life is anemic and the flower is pale. Not only is the plant Plumeria in Second Life just ugly in itself, it’s often used at the wrong scale. Why is it often used at the wrong scale? Because it initially rezzes at the wrong scale, please see the picture to the right.

Why do people use Plumeria? They need a landscape filler that is load friendly and prim light (it’s only one prim) and they don’t have enough energy or forethought to go find a replacement. It used to be that you couldn’t find a one prim plant that was very good but that isn’t true anymore.  Nowadays you can find some sweet particle plants, or one prim sculpty plants that will help you out.

If you can’t find a replacement for the spot you want to put in Plumeria, just leave it out.

When you add Plumeria to a build landscape and it’s not to scale you do a disservice to yourself and the rest of your build. It’s a simple thing and it’s a little thing but all of those simple little things add up and Plumeria misuse is pretty common. Stand out from the crowd, don’t make this common mistake.

IF your build is about zany, off scaled objects then you know this doesn’t apply although I would still recommend not using Plumeria. Due to the misuse of poorly scaled Plumeria the hilarity of mis-scaled Plumeria on a build that uses large scaled objects will be lost, choose another plant.

Teizus Miles has some nice low prim plants at her shop,  (SLURL) Keep it Green.

Do you have a low prim plant of bush that you can reccomend? Where is a favorite spot that you get your landscaping plants from?

Please let me know so we can add it to our toolbox of Plumeria alternatives.

Zomg! I thought I was the only one that noticed the plumeria didn’t rez correctly! I’m a plant nut in RL, lived in Florida for a few years where gardens have it and have done enough traveling in tropical locals to know what it looks like. It drove me MAD how large it would rez at times, like a freaking tree for cripes sake!

LOL… so True! The plumeria in SL are awful… I have yet to find one that even comes close to being acceptable - but I’m still looking! Aloha

Yay! I’m not the only one who hates this plant! I didn’t realize it was a plumeria for the longest time as we don’t really have them here. I thought it was some sort of Mespilus Tree (Loquat) because of the leafshape–growing up in New Orleans, you seem them all over.

In fact, I used it in the past to fill in a garden in my New Orleans-style build where I was running low on prims. I think I scaled it down and shoved it in the back as filler. I can’t rez linden plants on my Harajukubox lot now, so I cant even have the temptation to use the oogly thing.

But it’s not just this one — quite a few of the supplied plants in the library are very secondlife 1.0. i.e. Zoom in on the texture of the rezzable grass tufts — it’s just so pixilated and BLEH! I wish they would update these with better textures and still have the prim savings that you get by using a library plant. And they get used a lot to give beaches and all a bit of visual interest. I just irks me a bit seeing the beautiful atmospherics created with windlight juxtaposed out-date plant textures — kinda like a fly sitting on the face of the Mona Lisa.

If LL can update the default animations to get rid of the library clothing andf the default walks, why not do the same thing with a few more ‘bleh’ library plant textures?

Wouldn’t it be lovely for the Linden library plants to be refreshed, like the avatars were earlier this year? = )

For beautifull looking plants I always go to Botannical or Heart Garden Center (and they have some low.prim plants too).

amanzing trees low prim (2 per tree) , nothing like the sculptomancy ones.

That said, I do use Plumeria, mixed with other plants, and in a form of a small bush looks great, I have it in one of my gardens and i’ll show you inworld whenever you want :)

One of the best plants of SL is the Linden Fern, I use it a lot, but I agree, the plants in the library do need a refresh, they are the same since 2004 I think.

If there’s still some interest I might make one! Most of the 1 prim plants I make are fantasy, but I enjoy doing true botanical ones from time to time.

First of all I would like to say great blog! I had a quick question in which I’d like to ask if you don’t mind. I was interested to find out how you center yourself and clear your mind prior to writing. I’ve had a tough time clearing my mind in getting my thoughts out. I truly do take pleasure in writing but it just seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes are usually wasted just trying to figure out how to begin. Any recommendations or hints? Cheers!
